Treating Tinnitus with Tinnitus Retraining Therapy

Tinnitus affects all patients differently, so TRT treatments must be customized for each particular situation. At the base level, TRT is comprised of two elements:

  • Retraining Counselling
You will be educated about your tinnitus so you clearly understand how it works and affects you. Once you know how and why it has became bothersome, you can learn to re-categorize your tinnitus as an insignificant – and therefore unnoticeable – signal.
  • Sound Therapy
Undergoing sound therapy interferes with your brain’s ability to detect and process the tinnitus signal.

After successfully undergoing Tinnitus Therapy Treatment, a patient will only be able to notice tinnitus when focusing on it.

Tinnitus treatment at K & H Audiology consists of three core sessions, followed by additional Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT).

First Session: Initial Consultation, 1.5 Hours

In this visit, we will assess how tinnitus has impacted your life to determine your treatment needs. The initial session will have two parts: a consultation and an audiological evaluation. After the diagnosis, you will be able to decide if you want to proceed with treatment.

Second Session: Hearing Instrument Evaluation, 1.5 Hours

This appointment will focus on evaluating the hearing instrument you need for your treatment. You will also have your first counselling session.

Third Session: Hearing Instrument Fitting, 1 Hour

We will fit you with the recommended hearing instrument and will be programmed to optimize your treatment. You will also receive counselling about how to properly use the device.
